Twenty some years ago, I heard of the 25th Bicycle Corps through a two-page article in a children's magazine, Highlights, sent by my brother. Five years ago, I began to consider the possibility of retracing the route they pedaled from Ft. Missoula to St. Louis, back in 1897. During the planning, I decided I wanted to determine, as precisely as possible, when and where the Corps went. Much of that was known but there were, and still are, gaps. The more I've learned about the route the more intrigued I've become with the men - Who were they? What did they think and feel on this journey? How were they changed by the experience? Precious little remains to help me with those questions. I offer this information with the conviction that others will find the men, their odyssey and all the unanswered questions as compelling as I have. I retraced the Montana leg of the route in the early summer of 2009 and in late May and June of 2010 did the whole trip--from Ft. Missoula to St. Louis.
